Barixá in Hantxa Kuin, the Huni Kuin (Kaxinawá) language, means sunshine or, ‘may the sun illuminate us’.

Hello, my name is Kawa Huni Kuin. I am a teacher, musician and paje (traditional healer) from the Huni Kuin (Kaxinawa) indigenous group based in Acre, Brazil.

I study the English language in order to share my culture and traditions with the world. Through these activities, I am able to support my family, my community and provide awareness to the world about the indigenous peoples of Acre and Brazil.

Vision

Kawá Huni Kuin shares his community’s traditions and perspectives on a global stage directly with the international community in the English language.

In 2018 Kawá was the youngest Huni Kuin to leave his village in the forest to go to Europe. He arrived in Manchester together with his friend and anthropologist Verónica Castro with an intention to learn about life outside of the forest, how the “white people” live and to learn the English language in order to be able to represent his community to the English speaking world. He attended a small language school in Manchester, and through small local events he began to create awareness about indigenous life and traditions in the Brazilian Amazon. Nine months later, during the great fires in the Amazon he was called for a radio interview by the BBC (links below), which he delivered in English.
